discovery of diamonds in 1867 in what is now the capital
Kimberley, led to a short-lived diamond rush. The digging
for diamonds during this time caused the biggest man made
hole - The Big Hole, which is now a big tourist attraction
in the Northern Cape. The province's other famous attraction
is the spectacular display of wildflowers in the Namaqualand
region in springtime.
